Tapstate vs. a streaming stack
Compare a unified operational-data path with independently operated capture, broker, processing, and serving systems
Debezium, Kafka, Flink, and purpose-built serving stores form a proven, composable architecture. Tapstate is designed around a different tradeoff: one governed model for capture, transformation, and current operational state.
Compare the operating models
| Decision | Composable streaming stack | tapstate product model |
|---|---|---|
| Product boundary | Separate capture, broker, processing, and serving systems | One Capture–Transform–Serve data path |
| Component choice | Select and replace each layer independently | Use an integrated resource and connector contract |
| Operations | Tune, upgrade, observe, and recover each layer | Reduce handoffs and duplicated configuration |
| Processing depth | Broad event-time, windowing, and stateful-compute ecosystem | Current preview: filter, map, JavaScript, union, and document assembly with nest; join and broader stateful composition remain targets |
| Authoring | Connector configuration, topics, jobs, and sink definitions | Reviewable tapstate resources |
Choose a composable stack when
- complex event-time windows or advanced stateful processing are central;
- Kafka is already the organizational backbone;
- independent scaling and replacement of each layer is a requirement;
- the team already operates the stack reliably;
- mature production evidence matters more than a unified control model.
Evaluate tapstate when
- the dominant problem is keeping operational state current across systems;
- duplicated connector, schema, and pipeline configuration slows delivery;
- a reviewable resource contract and deterministic validation are valuable;
- teams want one ownership boundary for a common data path;
- agent-assisted authoring is useful, but deterministic controls must remain authoritative.
Use both when boundaries are clear
The approaches are not mutually exclusive. A governed operational path can publish selected streams to Kafka, while a broader streaming platform handles specialized event processing and organization-wide distribution.
Compare cost, latency, correctness, recovery, and source impact only with the same workload and availability target. Architectural diagrams and configuration simplicity are not substitutes for measured production evidence.
